Working together is also at the heart of this principle. Cities can and should work with surrounding counties and other local governments to see that needed services are provided effectively and efficiently - eliminating overlaps as well as gaps. Candidate projects include the following: transportation systems, health care provision, job creation and regional marketing efforts.
Likewise, small cities that are part of a larger urban region have to accept that they are equally, and perhaps primarily, responsible for the development of the region and not abandon this role to larger cities.
The boundaries that prevent such cooperation - whether political jurisdiction or narrow mindset - must be rethought.
Adjacent communities are seeing the need for signage to attract visitors to their communities. Collaboration among these cities is a good example of working together for the good of both cities.
