Communities have seen an astounding increase in the rates of inactivity, obesity, and chronic disease over recent years. Civic leaders, local officials and the general citizenry can take an active role in improving the health of the community. Cities that encourage infrastructure and programs for a healthy lifestyle improve the quality of life in the community and allow its citizens to reap the health benefits and economic advantages afforded to a more active way of life.
Communities are conducting studies on obesity and the consequences to there city and citizens. To combat this health risk, communities and community programs are trying to develop walking paths, bike trails, community centers, and the like to encourage citizens to exercise and become healthier.
