One To One
One To One Literacy is a critical component of academic excellence and the gatekeeper for future academic success. Unfortunately, according to the 2008 Kentucky Core Content Reading test data 25% (12,395) of students in third grade in KY are not reading proficiently, and that number increases to 29% (14,220) of students in fourth grade.
What is One To One? NewCities Institute and the Partnership for Successful Schools merged in 2008 and in doing so have joined forces to accelerate student achievements in reading through the One to One program. Together, with the help of local community volunteers and businesses, they are building a community of readers utilizing One to One.
What does One To One Do? One to One is a program designed to provide opportunities for a struggling reader to practice reading and gain self-confidence. This is accomplished through the use of a volunteer reading coach. One to One reading coaches are given a comprehensive training to gain an understanding of how a child learns to read and write. The coaches are given specific strategies and activities to engage a young student in reading.
Each community in the Commonwealth can be part of the solution by:
- owning the expectation that every child will read proficiently by third grade
- supporting the One to One initiative
- participating as a One to One literacy coach and recruiting others to become a One to One literacy coach
