City Diaries

NewCity Moscow

In 2005, the NewCities Institute created “America’s NewCities Initiative” to assist communities in engaging their citizens.  Based upon the 12 Principles of Community Building, the Initiative provides processes and strategies to help communities thrive in the 21st global economy.  Our communities are listed on the right.  You can follow our adventures as citizens describe their hopes and dreams for the future of their communities.

Over a period of twelve months, hundreds of citizens participated in the process that became a work in progress.  Through a series of listening sessions, charettes, and continuous dialogue, the NewCities Institute worked with the community to devise a series of strategies to address several recurring themes that emerged throughout the process.

in September 2006, the NewCities Institute presented its final recommendations to the community.  While the community has utilized several of the strategies outlined in the final report, the leaders are continuing to engage Moscow's citizens in meaningful dialogue about the community's future.

We salute the courage of the local leadership to continuously engage its citizens in meaningful dialogue.  We are proud to call Moscow, Idaho our first NewCity!

Congratulations Moscow!

NewCity Morehead

In 2006, Morehead and Rowan County, Kentucky took the unprecedented step of local intergovernmental cooperation by jointly engaging in Kentucky's first NewCity initiative.  As the city of Morehead and the Rowan County Fiscal Court voted on this historic cooperative effort, other community leaders stepped up to join in the effort including Morehead State University, St. Claire Regional Hospital, the Morehead-Rowan County Economic Development Corporation, Maysville Community and Technical College-Rowan Campus, and the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce.

Multiple listening sessions throughout the city, the county, and on-campus were held as citizens engaged the community's leadership in open dialogue about the future of their community.  Their comments and the community's strategies were chronicled throughout the process.  The results may be found through the links below.
