Evelyn Borchard Metzger (1911-2007) of New York City, was a level-headed and self-possessed individual, devoted to her art. The study and creation of art were determining factors of her life. She painted a mixture of subjects in a variety of styles including realism, impressionism, fauvism, and cubism, Evelyn Metzger has painted many urban genre scenes of New York City. In her lifetime she had a major exhibition in Argentina and then exhibited in France, Mexico and the United States. Her work is in the Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C. Mrs. Metzger’s grandson was a student at Centre College in Danville and became friends with Ross Lovely and thus, the Lovely family. The Metzger’s have made a generous gift to the NewCities Institute and the Kentucky League of Cities in providing the art for others to enjoy. The Metzger Virtual Exhibit and the NewCities Institute 12 Principles of Community Building A “city” is not as we may think in legal, boundaried terms. Rather, a “city” is where people have gathered since the beginning of time to come together to create in concert what is impossible isolated in the wilderness. “City” is where people come together in civic culture – to celebrate, to worship, to raise their children, to trade their wares and to provide security. The NewCities Institute is a nonprofit educational organization founded by the Kentucky League of Cities in 2001. The Institute inspires citizens to see the possible in their own communities. Celebrating and enjoying local culture is a key element in the philosophy of the NewCities Institute. NewCities celebrates cities! We present the artwork of Evelyn Borchard Metzger as they relate to the NewCities 12 Principles of Community Building’s four core areas. The National Museum of Women in the Arts published a tribute to Mrs. Metzger in 1995, The Age of Grandeur and a Woman Who Lived It – Artist Evelyn Metzger, by Brett Topping Nancy G. Heller. This in-depth look at the artist reveals that Evelyn Metzger lived a first class life. Even as a young child, she exhibited a passion for art, a strong sense of independence, intelligence and a strong awareness of graciousness. Her travels around the world throughout her life are reflected in the artwork. The style of her art varies over the years as she studied all forms of art from an abundance of artists and mediums.
